Abstract:
Inter-bead voids in large-scale additive manufacturing affect the effective properties of the bulk material. This work implements and exercises a homogenization method to analytically calculate the stresses and homogenized elastic properties for arbitrary-shaped voids in anisotropic media using conformal mapping and complex variable elasticity. In contrast to existing finite element analysis (FEA) and spectral methods, the presented analytical homogenization method can handle complex void geometries without incurring performance penalties. Preliminary findings indicate that the complex variable-based homogenization method can produce similar void geometries and stress concentrations as FEA methods but requires substantially less run time. Additional comparisons are drawn to Mori-Tanaka and FEA.
