Experimental and Theoretical Elastic Analysis of Sandwich Composite Plates.

Sandwich composite panels with face sheets of woven E-glass fibre and unidirectional carbon fibres polymer matrix composites and an elastomer-modified vinyl ester epoxy resin as the polymer matrix and a core of either balsa wood or PVC foam were fabricated by vacuum-assisted resin transfer moulding. The panels were subjected to quasi-static bending using the Hydromat Test System and deflections and strains at the centre of the panels measured by means of a linear variable displacement transducer and embedded interferometer fibre optic strain sensors, respectively. The experimental findings were compared with the predictions of two analytical solutions based on the first order shear deformation theory (symmetric cross-ply laminated plates with shear correction factor based on the principle of shear strain energy equivalence and a simplified model for sandwich plates). 15 refs.
