Abstract:
Sandwich structures consist of a low density core between two thin, high stiffness/high strength skins or face sheets. This layered structure allows great efficiencies in bending stiffness, or flexural rigidity, relative to the weight. While these structures have been used extensively over the years in many industries and applications, reliable methods for testing and characterization have been lacking. Three-and four-point bending tests are used to evaluate the material properties of sandwich beams in one direction; however these tests have some limitations. Beam bending tests introduce point loads that may compress the core causing stress concentrations, which may lead to errors in the test results. Also, beam bending tests do not simulate 2D distributed pressures that are typical in marine and aerospace applications.
