ASCC expands Ocean, Coastal Engineering & Offshore Wind Team with Gusciora Hire

The Advanced Structures and Composites Center (ASCC) is pleased to announce the hire of Matthew Gusciora as an Engineer on our Ocean, Coastal Engineering & Offshore Wind Team. 

Originally from Malvern, Pennsylvania, Gusciora has always been interested in mechanical systems and machinery. Gusciora started at the ASCC as an undergraduate student studying mechanical engineering working on several 1:50 scale model building projects, testing offshore floating hulls for wind turbines, CAD (Computer-Aided Design) work, and full-scale commercial systems for deployment. 

In high school, Gusciora completed engineering internships at Sure Power Inc. and DVL Consulting Engineers Inc. where he developed his knowledge of CAD design, preventive maintenance on offsite systems, and uninterruptible power supply. 

“I was impressed with the skills that Matt brought to the table when he was hired on as an undergraduate student,” said Peter Jalbert, Drafting & Prototype Production Manager. “He has already proven himself to be an integral part of the team”.

When asked why the work he’s doing is important, Gusciora said, “It’s important to research renewable energy with it being in such high demand. We need solutions for offshore wind energy.”

Since being hired full-time as an engineer, Gusciora is continuing his work and research in offshore wind modeling. By testing scale models of offshore wind turbines and understanding their strengths and limitations, this work helps us better understand and develop floating offshore wind turbines. Floating Offshore Wind has the potential to change how the world produces and receives renewable energy.

In his free time, Gusciora enjoys hiking, fishing, and anything outdoors.
