Windstorm Challenge 2017 is a high school STEM competition that engages students with floating offshore wind technology, innovation, and business in the Alfond W2 Ocean Engineering Lab at the UMaine Advanced Structures and Composites Center. This competition presents students with an incredible opportunity to engage with engineering principles, teamwork, innovation, and marketing at Maine’s premier R&D institution.

The challenge asks teams of middle and high school students to work together to design and construct a scale-model floating wind turbine platform, test the design under wind and wave conditions, and deliver a sales pitch-style presentation to a panel of judges. Members of the winning team each receive an internship valued at more than $20,000,contingent upon enrollment at UMaine. The program helps students, particularly rural Maine students of low socioeconomic status, consider a future in STEM fields.

All contributions will be used to support Windstorm Challenge 2017 programming, including travel scholarships for rural Maine schools. Contributors will receive recognition on event signage, promotional material, and mention during the competition’s award ceremony in May 2017.
