The Advanced Structures and Composites Center is a world-leading, interdisciplinary research Center, and the largest such research Center at a Maine university. The growing Center is housed in a 100,000 ft2 laboratory with more than 200 full and part time personnel. The Center has served more than 500 clients globally, including 150 Maine companies, by helping them develop new technologies in the materials and structures fields. It has employed more than 2,300 student interns, has had over 23,000 visitors, and its innovative work has been featured in the news more than 1,500 times. The Center has received more than 40 national and international excellence awards, spunoff new businesses across Maine from its research work, and has been recognized for its innovation worldwide, including at the White House. Examples of challenges that the Center is tackling include developing floating wind turbines that can power electric cars and heat homes in coastal cities and states, developing bridges and roads that can last significantly longer, standing up the largest 3D printer in the World (100 ft long x 22 ft wide x 10 ft high) that can print with wood at 500 pounds per hour, and developing green bio-based construction materials that can be 100% recycled. The University of Maine’s Advanced Structures and Composites Center is seeking applications for the position of Special Assistant to the Executive Director.
As Special Assistant to the Executive Director, you are a senior administrative staff member who will maximize the Executive Director’s effectiveness by providing professional support for all aspects of Center operations and programs. Through your duties as internal liaison, you will strengthen relationships between the Executive Director, the Management Team, the faculty, and the Center employees and students. As external liaison, you will also solidify relationships with external partners and clients, industry, research units, academic departments and colleges, UMaine administrative offices, the University of Maine System Office, government agencies and elected officials. You will help organize the Management Team strategic planning activities, meetings, and monitor deliverables. You will manage administrative staff to streamline the Center’s work flow. Additionally, you will keep Center personnel and students informed of important changes and internal Center details. Typical hiring range for this position is $55,000 to $73,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience.
