Fortus 900mc 3D Production System – Stratasys
The Fortus 900mc 3D Production System is capable of 3D printing large parts up to 36” x 24” x 36”, while also consistently achieving a high level of strength and dimensional accuracy. The Fortus 900mc’s versatility to print durable high temperature materials makes it an excellent candidate for advanced prototyping and rapid development of custom tooling.
High temperature thermoplastic molds are capable of withstanding the necessary thermoforming conditions including high pressures while maintaining accurate part tolerances. The Fortus 900mc’s system uses a fused deposition modeling (FDM) technology, a process characterized by multi-layer extrusion of a heated thermoplastic filament. The thermoplastic filament is heated inside the printer until a semi-liquid, molten state is achieved, and then extruded. Through the use of carefully coordinated movements of the extrusion head, called toolpaths, the printer is able to extrude complex geometries prepared in a computer-aided design (CAD) file. Overall layer thickness ranges from 0.007” to 0.020”, with a tight tolerance of +/- 0.0035” in the x and y direction and +/- 0.0035” slice height in the z direction. The print oven remains heated throughout the print, keeping the part’s rate of cooling to a minimum, allowing for increased bond strength between part layers and reduced part warping. For specific thermoplastic materials, ABS, ASA, and PC, part geometry and tolerances are maintained during the print by printing a support material matrix that is later removed. This Stratasys’ production system is compatible with 13 engineering thermoplastics, each offering specialized properties such as UV resistance and electrostatic dissipation. These materials are stored in dual material canister bays, allowing for longer print durations and multi-color prints.
