Sherwood’s “Wave Cloud II” kinetic sculpture installed at UMaine Composites Center

A stainless steel kinetic sculpture has been installed outside the UMaine Advanced Structures and Composites Center. “Wave Cloud II” was created by award-winning American sculptor George Sherwood. This piece was commissioned through Maine Percent for Art, a program of the Maine Arts Commission, as part of the center’s recent Alfond W2 Ocean Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing Labs expansion.

The artist and commissioned work were chosen by the Percent for Art Committee as the work is kinetic and connected well with both engineering and ocean/wind energy research.

Sherwood most recently had a show at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay last fall.

From the artist:

George Sherwood, an award-winning American sculptor, was born and raised in the coastal town of Fairfield, Connecticut. George now lives and works in Ipswich, MA, and he holds degrees in both art and engineering from, respectively, the Hartford Art School and the University of Vermont.

Sherwood’s sculpture explores aesthetic systems of space, time and the dynamic relationships of objects in motion. The choreography of each piece is governed by a set of basic movements, facilitated by an arrangement of rotating joints and aerodynamic surfaces. His work is usually made of stainless steel, the reflective qualities of which integrate the sculpture into its environment. Wind speed and direction, shades of light, time of day, precipitation, and seasonal color transform the qualities of light and movement.
